Your chances of securing confirmed train tickets on popular routes just went up. The Railways has zeroed in on the biggest reason behind the perennial complaint of passengers not being able to get confirmed tickets even after turning up at the ticket counters at 8 am, when they open across India.
An internal investigation revealed that every day, 4,000 confirmed berths would be hoarded by touts within one minute of the computer reservation system being thrown open to public.
The probe found that the touts, who sell tickets at a higher price to passengers in need, were exploiting a “facility” in the passenger reservation software. The facility allows someone who has already purchased a ticket to alter journey details and book another train within seconds at the last moment.

Touts would buy tickets for relatively less popular trains a day earlier, and then swap them for tickets on popular trains — Rajdhanis, Durontos and other long-distance trains — between 8 am and 8.01 am. This would take seconds since their booking details were already fed into the system.
“Touts would buy any ticket a day in advance and the next day, they would get ticket details changed. The booking clerk merely had to generate another PNR with the passenger details already fed into the system a day earlier. This took seconds,” Ajay Shukla, Member (Traffic), Railway Board, told The Indian Express. “We have now disabled this facility for the first hour after the system opens,” he added.
The probe, launched after the Railways Ministry found a huge number of tickets being booked this way, also indicated that booking clerks and other insiders were involved in the racket. The ministry plans now plans to pinpoint the culprits and take action.
After disabling the facility for the first hour, the Railway Board officials monitored the booking pattern across the country for the past few days. Now, instead of 4,000 journey/train changes in the first minute, only a few such changes are made in the course of the day. “We believe those are genuine transactions by passengers altering their journeys,” Shukla said.

Mangalore, March 17: When the country has been struggling to cope up with the news of 71-year-old nun gangrape case, another nun has been kidnapped and manhandled. However, she was lucky enough as she managed to escape before she too was raped.
The latest incident took place in Mangaluru, Karnataka on Monday, March 16. The young nun, who is pursuing her nursing course in a city private hospital, was allegedly kidnapped and manhandled in a broad daylight by four men.
All four assailants allegedly pushed her into an auto where they gagged and manhandled her. The young nun, however, jumped out of the auto and saved herself. She lost all her belongings - mobile phone, handbag, money, watch. She sustained minor injuries and later was admitted to a private hospital.
Doctors informed that her condition is stable but the young nun is still in a state of shock. Meanwhile, reports claimed that Mangalore Police initially was reluctant to register complaint against unknown assailants. However, an FIR was filed later in the evening at Mangalore rural police station. 71-year-old nun gangraped in West Bengal:
The Mangalore incident once again proved that women are not safe in this country. Recently, a gang of robbers looted a convent school and gangraped the "oldest nun" present in the school.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protest when she reached Ranaghat to meet the victim. She promised to take action against the culprits who are yet to be arrested. Mamata Banerjee was quoted as saying, "The sister is doing well. Some arrests have been made but we are looking for the mastermind.
The borders are being monitored and if they have gone to other states, we will make arrangements to catch them." Meanwhile, there was uproar in Parliament over the nun gangrape case. Opposition party members raised questions why culprits have not been arrested so far.

KOLKATA, India (AP) — A nun in her 70s was gang-raped by a group of bandits Saturday when she tried to prevent them from robbing a Christian missionary school in eastern India, police said, the latest crime to focus attention on the scourge of sexual violence in the country.
The nun was hospitalized in serious condition after being attacked by seven or eight men at the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Nadia district, 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of the West
Bengal state capital of Kolkata, a police officer said.
The men escaped and police are searching for them, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
The robbers tied the school's security guards with ropes early Saturday and entered the nuns' room, where the women were sleeping. They took one of the nuns to another room when she tried to block their way and then raped her, the officer said.
The woman who was attacked is either 71 or 72 and is the oldest nun at the school, he said.
The men escaped with some cash, a cellphone, a laptop computer and a camera, all belonging to the school, the officer said. They also ransacked the school's chapel and holy items, the Press Trust of India news agency cited the archbishop of Kolkata, Thomas D'Souza, as saying.
Scores of angry students, their parents and teachers blocked a nearby highway and railroad tracks for several hours demanding swift police action leading to the arrest of the culprits.
Mamta Banerjee, the state's top elected official, strongly condemned the attack and ordered a high-level police investigation. D'Souza appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony in the area.
India has a long history of tolerance for sexual violence, but the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman aboard a moving bus in New Delhi caused outrage across the nation.
The outcry led the federal government to rush legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women. The law also makes it a crime for officers to refuse to open cases when complaints are made.

Bhagalpur: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a man in Bania village here and her mutilated body was today recovered from railway tracks, police said.
The accused, Dilkhush Yadav, lured the minor yesterday to an isolated place where he allegedly raped her before murdering and dumping her on railway tracks, Superintendent of Police Shekhar Kumar said.
The victim was later run over by a speeding train, he said, adding the mutilated remains of the body was recovered today and sent for post-mortem.
The victim's father, Md Jabbar, identified her and lodged a case against Yadav on charges of rape and murder, Kumar said.
The accused, a native of Bhawanipur village, was arrested today, he said, adding the investigation is underway.
